About

About Seismic Utensils, LLC

Filip Soos and Jim Applegate founded SeismicUtensils, LLC in 2016 with the idea of bringing additional exploration tools to the market.
The goal is to bring additional functionality to the exploration software packages that are currently on the market.
We plan to provide utilities to support the capabilities of the existing packages. The objective is to develop straight-forward, yet elegant, and technically sound products that will be easy to use and provide information that users can exploit to improve their exploration success.

Our first product is AVO-Detect.

Work is currently underway on the development of additional tools that we anticipate releasing later in 2017.

SeismicUtensils, LLC is headquartered in Denver, Colorado, USA. A development and support operation is located near Hamburg, Germany.

Persons

Filip Soos is an experienced geophysicist having worked in seismic processing and software development for 12 years. Most recently, he was Chief Geophysicist for GeoPro Geophysics in Hamburg guiding the development of software to record, process, model and interpret seismic data from ocean-bottom nodes. Filip has worked on major ocean-bottom node projects to define crustal structure in many areas including the Gulf of Mexico, Tanzania, Greece and the North Atlantic. Filip has been instrumental in the design and development of AVO-Detect and is in charge of ongoing development and enhancements of not only AVO-Detect, but also forthcoming products. Filip is Vice-President, Development, and Chief Geophysicist for SeismicUtilities, LLC. He has a BS and MSc in geophysics from the University of Hamburg, Germany.

Jim Applegate has many years of experience in academia and industry. He was a professor at Boise State University, Colorado School of Mines, University of Adelaide (Australia) and University of Louisiana (Lafayette). He has worked for major and independent oil companies, consulted and operated as an independent developing his own exploration projects. Most recently he has been Manager/Geophysicist for Applegate Exploration, LLC and CEO for Pegasus Oil & Gas, Inc. Jim is CEO of SeismicUtensils, LLC. He holds the degrees of Geophysical Engineer, MSc and PhD in geophysical engineering from Colorado School of Mines. He is a registered Professional Geophysicist, Geologist, and Engineer, Certified Petroleum Geologist, and member of the Society of Independent Professional Earth Scientists. He is an Honorary Member of Colorado School of Mines Alumni Association and Denver Geophysical Society, and an Emeritus Member of both SEG and AAPG.

AVO-Detect

Why AVO-Detect?

AVO-Gradient with Timeslice - Stratigraphic Trap
AVO-Gradient with Timeslice – Stratigraphic Trap

People tend to think of AVO as a tool to predict fluid content, primarily gas, but AVO can be used for much more. AVO is a pre-stack attribute, a function of rock properties and acquisition geometry. The AVO response is a complex function of the physical propertiesof the overlying and underlying rock at an interface. If we assume that the properties of the overlying rock are constant, then the AVO response is a function of changes within the underlying rock. These changes may be a result of the change in fluid content, but the changes can just as easily be because of a variation in the physical properties of the underlying rock. The changes may be stratigraphic (change in rock type/depositional environment), porosity related, or even influenced by existing fractures. Thus, defining an AVO anomaly is just the first step in deciding whether one has a viable exploration or development target. Is it a gas filled reservoir? A porous channel deposit? High porosity zone within a reef? Or maybe an area of increased fracture density in tight reservoir?

Please check out AVO-Detect. We believe it can be a useful tool to help you in making exploration and development decisions. We think you will like it.
